Alexis Johnston Benamou [winner]
Alexis Johnston Benamou (working under Lux Vespera) was born in Montreal, where she currently lives working out of four colourful walls. Lux earned a degree from Université de Paris 8 during an exchange which led to further international exploration and research. She has since resumed her academic pursuit with Concordia University under the department of Studio Arts, where she will graduate in 2010. Lux has been collaborating with photographers and other artists in the realm of performance and theatre in creating costumes , environments and characters. Her interest in performance has been growing and is being funnelled into current and upcoming projects in theatre and cinema. "Art is a happy accident of inspiration".
What is your motivation to design?
My mom and the love for creating beautiful things
Why are you participating in the Wearable Art Fashion Show?
I strongly believe that it is a wonderful cause and I was excited to participate and express myself by my passion for fashion.
What can we expect from you?
A creative sense of femine fashion that was inspired by recycled goods. "Anything can be beautiful".
For more about Sofia, please check out:

I get motivated by the simplest things around me but my main inspiration & motivation comes from the base of it all, fabrics & trims. I can walk all day in a fabric store and ideas would spring out one after another.
The challenge to use recycled goods as a garment. Maybe a bit uncomfortable for the model but this can bring an amazing effect to the audience.
What can you expect from me?
For this particular show, you can expect lights! My goal is to light up my model.
[honorable mention]
There are endless possibilities in the world of fashion. When you are able to open your eyes and see more than the usual, when you are able to look outside the box and go beyond what you are taught in the classroom, that is when you are able to create fashion that will change peoples lives. I want to be able to create that feeling inside little girls and boys who have a dream just like I do, as they stare in awe at Oscar De La Renta’s spring 2010 collection. I want to make people feel beautiful in what they wear and how they wear it. I want to make people smile.
I am participating because I have been given the opportunity to share what I love for an amazing cause. I am going into this competition with an open mind and nothing to lose. I hope to make at least one viewer look at my work and be overwhelmed by the creativity and expression. When that is accomplished I have succeeded.
Designing is my hobby, my passion and my love. That's my motivation.
To raise awareness for a great cause and to express my crazy ideas into reality.
Imagination.

What motivates you to design?
I am motivated to design intriguing objects by objects of my intrigue: an unexpected conversation; whirlwind travels; lost treasures resurfacing from the depths of my studio. Often, it is more of an inexplicable need to create spontaneously than a definable motivating factor.
Art can be an extremely powerful way of getting a message across to others and uniting them in a common goal. I am proud to be in the capacity to create Art that will promote awareness of Leukemia and Lymphoma in an approachable and enjoyable way.

My motivation to design is generated by the ideas I pick up in my environment or how my thoughts have translated them. I believe we all have a in-built need for expression as human beings and the way I choose to execute that expression and the way I feel it comes naturally to me is through design or art in general.
I chose the Wearable Art Fashion Show because I had an idea of an art piece I wanted to create that would take the form of a dress. This show will be a great opportunity to put that thought into action as well as help support such a great cause!
A depiction of visual sound that will shock your senses!
[2nd place]
I am a local artist and probably the only one who does not do fashion. I make dresses as an art form and they usually relate to immigration. I have been making these 'garments for survival' for almost 20 years. This new piece, conceived for Kristina [I love her passion for cancer research, my own father died of cancer so this was a cause I could not ignore], speaks of an Electric City. I am working on the concept of connecting threads and not only metaphorically. I usually start by one thread, always metallic and with it I weave or crochet the entire dress. This time I chose materials that work as conductors of electrical energy, computers, telephones, etc.. Hence the title 'connecting threads'. These threads connects us in the city, the city that buzzes amidst the sometimes deep disconnection that we experience. Instant and constant connection through our multiple digital connectors seem to be isolating us more and more.

When I am designing a garment either for myself or for a client, I am always motivated by the mere experience of it. The fact that I am able to transform ones feelings about themselves through the art of fashion and design excites every inch of my soul. I love the hype of finding that one seem that magically transforms ones silhouette, that one fabric that has the ability to put a smile on a person's face. I love the feeling of satisfaction that I get when I look back at a design and can honestly say that I am proud of the finished product. The single most motivating aspect about designing is by far the satisfaction I get when I do it.
The reason I am participating in the Wearable Art Fashion Show is to challenge myself. Seeing as I am still a second year Fashion design student, opportunities to challenge myself in such ways haven’t really presented themselves. This is really a way to show what I can do as a young and upcoming designer, and I also am very attached to the cause of this fundraising event.
As a designer, I like to reinvent old classics. I love gowns, regal designs and breathe taking garments. Fabrics are a true inspiration to me, and I love to use elements that people really aren’t used to seeing in fashion. When I design, I put on a show, and that is really what I would like people to know about me. I’m all about entertaining people through the art of fashion…
My motivation to design to get back into the creative side of the fashion industry. I participated in a fashion show three years ago when I graduated and loved the buzz and craziness that it brought. So this show is a good way to get back into it.
I am participating in the wearable art fashion because it's for a good cause and also because when I saw the theme the idea just came to me so I had to.
In the near future; I would like to participate in more fashion shows around Montreal, and be more involved in the industry.
Design by: TL Poitras
What is your motivatin to design?
My motivation to design is an expression of my inner creativity. I enjoy the process from initial thought and design to the completion of the final product.
I am participating in the Wearable Art Fashion Show to support a great cause, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, while designing with recycled materials to save the environment.
You can expect my garment to be a very creative and detailed piece incorporating unique recycled
materials including cut wine corks and garbage bags.
The challenge.
As an artist I'm uncommitted to any one mode or medium. For me, art is the process. It is the experience, the possibilities, the unknown. Having never done fashion before, I engaged this opportunity to explore the relationship between form, line and motion from a new perspective. With anthropological reference and the curiosities of the cubists, I will create a design that is thoughtful in concept and graceful in presentation.
To create art that is a part of healing.
My motivation comes from my need to be creative, designing is my outlet.
I am participating as a designer, because I want to make this event a memorable SUCCESS! I also find designing "Wearable Art" a nice challenge to keep my creativity fresh and exciting!
What you can expect is to be surprised that my designs are actually made of 99% recyclable materials. I want the audience to wonder how I was able to create these looks with the materials I have chosen; all while impressing them with the overall look on the runway!
